It’s Thirsty Thursday but we must have been a day ahead last night. A little foggy this morning after some celebrating of good news, but light roast Ethiopian in my cup brought me around pretty quick. Today I recall my experiences with a hardware store in my old town stemming from a chat with Kori last night. Before that we hit up The Perfect Cup Question “What are two things that every person should do before they die?” and also LOTS of History prepared for your enjoyment by Pip over at Ducktioncups.com.

Today’s segment brought to you by the letter Y, as in Y don’t you buy some Ducktion Cups?
hehe
Anyway…
- 1927 – The Bird of Paradise, a U.S. Army Air Corps Fokker tri-motor, completes the first transpacific flight,
from the mainland United States to Hawaii.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_Paradise_(aircraft)
- 1952 – The first Miss Universe pageant is held. Armi Kuusela from Finland wins the title of Miss Universe 1952.
Pip’s notes – This reminds me of ‘sportsball’. American baseball calls it “the world series”, but it’s just the USA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Universe
- 1995 – Space Shuttle program: STS-71 Mission (Atlantis) docks with the Russian space station Mir for the first time
The Shuttle delivered a relief crew of two cosmonauts Anatoly Solovyev and Nikolai Budarin to the station and recovered Increment astronaut Norman Thagard. Atlantis returned to Earth on July 7 with a crew of eight.
It was the first of seven straight missions to Mir flown by Atlantis, and the second Shuttle mission to land with an eight-person crew after STS-61-A in 1985.

- 2007 – Apple Inc. releases its first mobile phone, the iPhone.
Pip’s notes – Silly Apple users…

Happy Birthdays
- 1858 – George Washington Goethals, American general and engineer, co-designed the Panama Canal (d. 1928)
a United States Army General and civil engineer, best known for his administration and supervision of the construction and the opening of the Panama Canal.
He was the State Engineer of New Jersey and the Acting Quartermaster General of the United States Army.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_Goethals
- 1925 – Francis S. Currey, American World War II Medal of Honor recipient (d. 2019)
a United States Army technical sergeant and a recipient of the United States military’s highest decoration for valor,
the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
Pip’s notes- This dude popped up to get German infantrymen’s attention (as he shot them),
then used anti-tank grenades & a bazooka and took out 4 tanks.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_S._Currey
- 1944 – Gary Busey, American actor
In 1974, Busey made his major film debut with a supporting role in Michael Cimino’s
buddy action caper Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, starring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges.
Pip’s notes – Holy crap! The movie “Rookie of the Year” came out in 1993?!
I feel old. And I still can’t believe they did a remake of “Point Break”…
….
…. UTAH! GET ME TWO!

Passings
- 1975 – Tim Buckley, American singer-songwriter and guitarist (b. 1947)
He began his career based in folk rock, but subsequently experimented with genres such as
psychedelia, jazz, the avant-garde, and funk as well as unconventional vocal stylings
Pip’s notes – … Yeah, it’s Friday. Lets play some ‘psychedelia’ music in the parts dept.
I wonder if I could wire up some headlights and make strobe lights in the warehouse…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Buckley
- 2003 – Katharine Hepburn, American actress (b. 1907)
She was known for her headstrong independence, spirited personality, and outspokenness,
cultivating a screen persona that matched this public image, and regularly playing strong-willed, sophisticated women
Pip’s notes – As Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once said – “Well behaved women seldom make history”… but who defines ‘behaved’?
Rock on with your bad self, Kathy. Cheers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharine_Hepburn
- 2022 – Hershel W. Williams, American Marine Corps warrant officer, last living Medal of Honor recipient from World War II (b. 1923)
Covered by only four riflemen, he fought for four hours under intense enemy small-arms fire and repeatedly returned to his own lines to prepare demolition charges and obtain serviced flame throwers.
He returned to the front, frequently to the rear of hostile emplacements, to wipe out one position after another.
Pip’s notes – Williams said that much of the action “is just a blank. I have no memory.”… Worth a wiki read. Just sayin’
