Anyway…. LOTS of History…
- 1863 – New York City draft riots: In New York City, opponents of conscription begin three days of rioting which will be later regarded as the worst in United States history.
Sometimes referred to as the Manhattan draft riots and known at the time as Draft Week, were violent disturbances in Lower Manhattan, widely regarded as the culmination of white working-class discontent with new laws passed by Congress that year to draft men to fight in the ongoing American Civil War.
The riots remain the largest civil and most racially charged urban disturbance in American history.
President Abraham Lincoln diverted several regiments of militia and volunteer troops after the Battle of Gettysburg to control the city.
The rioters were overwhelmingly Irish working-class men who did not want to fight in the Civil War and resented that wealthier men, who could afford to pay a $300 commutation fee to hire a substitute, were spared from the draft.
At the time a typical laborer’s wage was between $1.00 and $2.00 a day, and the fee was equivalent to $7,100 in 2022 (pip did not check that $ )
Pip’s notes – hahahaha, W the fuck?! “Sent several militia & volunteer troops…”
“Hey, yeah.. we know we said you can go south & shoot some Johnny Rebels, but we need you to go to New York and force civilians to get… er, force them to join in fighting a war that they shouldn’t have to..”
Initially intended to express anger at the draft, the protests turned into a race riot, with white rioters attacking black people, in violence throughout the city. The official death toll was listed at either 119 or 120 individuals.
Pip’s side notes – Really, humans?… really? Why didn’t ya go after the recruiting office/draft house? Not the damn neighborhoods.. (sigh)

- 1919 – The British airship R34 lands in Norfolk, England, completing the first airship return journey across the Atlantic in 182 hours of flight.
The only other airship in the class, R.34, became the first aircraft to make an east to west transatlantic flight in July 1919 and, with the return flight, made the first two-way crossing.
It was decommissioned later, after being damaged during a storm.
The crew nicknamed her “Tiny”.
The R.33 was “demilitarised” in 1920 and given over to civilian work with the civil registration G-FAAG. This work consisted of trials of new mast mooring techniques using the mast erected at Pulham.
Pip’s notes – She was called a “Pulham Pig” by the locals, as the blimps based there had been, and is immortalised in the village sign for Pulham St Mary.
Pip’s side notes – I went ahead and made popcorn, and assumed the comments for that would be worth a scroll. G-FAAG, erect, tiny…

- 1930 – The inaugural FIFA World Cup begins in Uruguay.
The tournament has been held every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War. The reigning champions are Argentina, who won their third title at the 2022 tournament.
Pip’s notes – Hey, look! a Sportsball! (Pip looks at PACKED stadium)
I’m not counting, we’ll go with a ‘mega-huge’ crowd. The term ‘packed’ comes to mind.
Pip’s side notes – I’m not much of a “sit and watch TV or movie” dude, anymore.
But… ahem I balled my damned eyes out on the last 3 episodes of season 3.
fuuuuuuuuuuuk.
So, the interwebz can document that to the previous QOTD, ’embarrassed moment’?
I’ll own it, it’s a great show. Cheers to it.
Bring a few tissues, if you happen to stumble across the show.

- 1956 – The Dartmouth workshop is the first conference on artificial intelligence.
In 1955, John McCarthy, young Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College, decided to organize a group to clarify and develop ideas about thinking machines.
He picked the name ‘Artificial Intelligence’ for the new field. He chose the name partly for its neutrality; avoiding a focus on narrow automata theory, and avoiding cybernetics which was heavily focused on analog feedback, as well as him potentially having to accept the assertive Norbert Wiener as guru or having to argue with him.
McCarthy approached the Rockefeller Foundation to request funding for a summer seminar at Dartmouth for about 10 participants.
In June, he and Claude Shannon, a founder of information theory then at Bell Labs, met with Robert Morison, Director of Biological and Medical Research to discuss the idea and possible funding, though Morison was unsure whether money would be made available for such a visionary project.
Pip’s notes – Perhaps building a robot with A/I named McCarthy? At least we can have a little nostalgia while the computers take over the world, and outer space.
(sometime in the future)
Shit! It’s a McCarty model 3-0-3-3! We gotta run!!!
(an A/I robot looks over and eyes flash green)
Bug out! RUN!RUN! RUN! It sees us!!
(the last few humans run off into the distance…)
Pip’s side notes – Yeah, that was a good 12 minute scene of a movie, in that thought wormhole.
just wait for the nine other robo-dudes who also participated in that conference… all become robots.
Pip’s side, side notes – Anyone have a source for a Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range? I think they may come in handy, sooner or later. Just a thought.
(Terminator 1 movie, while in the gunshop & conversation with counter worker)
Pip’s side, side, side notes – I didn’t expect green eyes. Red, yes. Not green.

- 1973 – Watergate scandal: Alexander Butterfield reveals the existence of a secret Oval Office taping system to investigators for the Senate Watergate Committee.
Pip’s notes – They would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn’t for Forrest Gump who had to spoil the plans!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixon_White_House_tapes
- 2008 – Battle of Wanat begins when Taliban and al-Qaeda guerrillas attack US Army and Afghan National Army troops in Afghanistan.
The distant position was primarily defended by United States Army soldiers with 2nd Platoon, Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
Pip’s notes – While skimming through the battle & background, this sounds like a nasty fight. Here’s a little cut & paste…
“However, the Bobcat broke down for one day, and could not lift high enough to place barriers to a 7-foot (2.1 m) height, but were placed to just a 4-foot (1.2 m) level, which would make it vulnerable to direct fire from guns or rockets which the attackers would exploit.”
….sigh.. only the dead have seen the end of war… Just comes to mind.

Happy Birthdays
- 1863 – Margaret Murray, British archaeologist, anthropologist, historian, and folklorist (d. 1963)
an Anglo-Indian Egyptologist and first woman to be appointed as a lecturer in archaeology in the United Kingdom.
Murray also became closely involved in the first-wave feminist movement, joining the Women’s Social and Political Union and devoting much time to improving women’s status at UCL.
Unable to return to Egypt due to the First World War, she focused her research on the witch-cult hypothesis, the theory that the witch trials of Early Modern Christendom were an attempt to extinguish a surviving pre-Christian, pagan religion devoted to a Horned God.
Although later academically discredited, the theory gained widespread attention and proved a significant influence on the emerging new religious movement of Wicca.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Murray
- 1886 – Father Edward J. Flanagan, founder of Boys Town (d. 1948)
Originally known as “The City of Little Men”, Using a loan of $90, he first rented a home at 25th and Dodge streets, in Omaha, to care for five boys.
From these beginnings, the City of Little Men developed new juvenile care methods in 20th-century America, emphasizing “social preparation as a model for public boys’ homes worldwide”.
In 2007, Boys Town provided direct youth care services to 13,033 boys and girls nationwide. In 2011, that number had skyrocketed to 28,065.
Pip’s notes – On 25 February 2012, the Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha opened the canonization process for Flanagan. At a 17 March 2012 prayer service at Boys Town’s Immaculate Conception Church, he was given the title, “Servant of God”.
This is the first of four titles bestowed in the process of canonization as a Catholic saint, if that is approved. The local investigation was completed in June 2015, including documentation of miracles, and the results forwarded to the Vatican

- 1911 – Bob Steele, American radio personality (d. 2002)
He was a radio host with WTIC Radio in Hartford, Connecticut, for more than 66 years, and hosted the morning radio scene in Southern New England for most of that time.
Pip’s notes – I head a dude say something, about a decade and change ago.
“man, terrestrial radio is dead” -cira 2008
Meanwhile I have Spotify with no ads playing, or a few wack-a-doo’s on YouTube.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Steele_(broadcaster)
- 1940 – Patrick Stewart, English actor, director, and producer
Pip’s notes – STAR TREK not STAR WARS.
STAR TREK is the one where there all communists, and do it for the good of the “Federation”, which has a few movies showing it’s curruption attempts and attempted genocide to continue it’s way in the galaxy.
STAR WARS is when a controlling group use force to control as many as possible, extort slaves & pretend the ‘old ways’ are still relevant….throughout the galaxy.
(Pip turns on cable TV ‘News’ and listens for 6 minutes)
….FUCK ME…. We’re in both, aren’t we?…
(Pip looks dead at camera, breaking the 4th wall)
WE. ARE. IN. BOTH. AREN’T WE?
coughs more
Pip’s side notes – Anyone recall the movie “Masterminds”?
2 quotes have not left my brain, since watching this movie.
“You know, I’m not a violent man but I really do think I’m going to have to kill someone here.”
and
” no le la partes carborundum” which is roughly ‘don’t let the bastards grind you down’
Pip’s side, side notes – Yeah, another ‘Masterminds quote’-
Lawyer: So this vest really works, huh?
Cop: Sure. It’s Swiss. It takes any caliber of bullet short of a Howitzer. Try to take it in the chest if you can.
Lawyer: Take it in the chest. You’re kidding.
Cop: The vest is not nearly as effective if you get shot in the face.

- 1962 – Tom Kenny, American voice actor and screenwriter
an American actor and comedian. He is known for voicing the titular character in SpongeBob SquarePants and associated media.
Kenny has voiced many other characters, including Heffer Wolfe in Rocko’s Modern Life, the Ice King in Adventure Time, the Narrator and Mayor in The Powerpuff Girls, Carl Chryniszzswics in Johnny Bravo, Dog in CatDog, Hank and Jeremy in Talking Tom and Friends, and Spyro from the Spyro video game series.
Pip’s notes – Yoo… .Rocco’s Modern Life… and Eek! the Cat! ‘it never hurts to help’
Pip’s side notes – Yes. Yes, it does hurt to help. Be sure it’s worth it.
It is possible to interrupt someone else’s Karma. Meditation for thought.

- 1969 – Ken Jeong, American actor, comedian, and physician
Kendrick Kang-Joh Jeong is a licensed physician in California but has since stopped practicing in favor of his acting career.
He’s appeared in the films Knocked Up, Role Models, Furry Vengeance, The Duff, Ride Along 2, Crazy Rich Asians, and Tom & Jerry.
Pip’s notes – If you don’t know who Dude is yet, “But did you dieee…..”
Yeah, that dude
Passings
- 1793 – Journalist and French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat is assassinated in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday, a member of the opposing political faction.
a French political theorist, physician, scientist, journalist and politician during the French Revolution, he was a vigorous defender of the sans-culottes, a radical voice, and published his views in pamphlets, placards and newspapers.
Pip’s notes – Hmm.. is this guy a good dude or not a good dude… I mean, he got smoke checked in his tub, while taking a medicinal bath for his debilitating skin condition.
The September Massacres were a series of killings of prisoners in Paris that occurred in 1792, from Sunday, 2 September until Thursday, 6 September, during the French Revolution. Between 1,100 and 1,600 people
Pip’s notes – So.. not a good dude?.. lets dip in this wormhole…
The September Massacres were a series of killings of prisoners in Paris that occurred in 1792, from Sunday, 2 September until Thursday, 6 September, during the French Revolution. Between 1,176 and 1,614 people
woah, scratch that… correction- turns out Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d’Armont traveled to Paris and obtained an audience with Marat, Corday fatally stabbed him with a knife while he was taking a medicinal bath.
Pip’s notes – How far did she travel? It was just in chat, about the astronaut who wore diapers and roadtripped to see the cheating husband, or something?
Pip’s side notes – woah… how long was I gone for?.. What time is it?… I need to shave again?..
Dude, those wormhole riptides pull ya in quick.. be careful.

- 1970 – Leslie Groves, American general and engineer (b. 1896)
a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project, a top secret research project that developed the atomic bomb during World War II.
After the war, Groves remained in charge of the Manhattan Project until responsibility for nuclear weapons production was handed over to the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1947.
He then headed the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, which had been created to control the military aspects of nuclear weapons.
He was given a dressing down by the Chief of Staff of the Army, General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, and told that he would never be appointed Chief of Engineers.
Three days later, Groves announced his intention to leave the Army.
He was promoted to lieutenant general just before his retirement on 29 February 1948 in recognition of his leadership of the bomb program.
By a special Act of Congress, his date of rank was backdated to 16 July 1945, the date of the Trinity nuclear test. He went on to become a vice-president at Sperry Rand

- 2014 – Thomas Berger, American author and playwright (b. 1924)
Little Big Man is a 1964 novel by American author Thomas Berger.
Often described as a satire or parody of the western genre, the book is a modern example of picaresque fiction.
Berger made use of a large volume of overlooked first-person primary materials, such as diaries, letters, and memoirs, to fashion a wide-ranging and entertaining tale that comments on alienation, identity, and perceptions of reality.
Easily Berger’s best known work, Little Big Man was made into a popular 1970 film by Arthur Penn
Probably best known for his (?)picaresque novel Little Big Man and the subsequent film by Arthur Penn, Berger explored and manipulated many genres of fiction throughout his career, including the crime novel, the hard-boiled detective story
Pip’s notes – woah! they made a book out of that movie!?! Cool!
IMDB quote cut & paste –
[first lines]
Jack Crabb: I am, beyond a doubt, the last of the old-timers. My name is Jack Crabb. And I am the sole white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn, uh, uh, popularly known as Custer’s Last Stand.”

Outside of Christians feasting on stuff….
It’s the The last day of Naadam (Mongolia)
Pip’s notes – Those Mongolians gotta be exhausted by now, with those games.
Maybe Ben Gay stocks went up a little bit?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statehood_Day_(Montenegro)
This has been Pip with Ducktion Cups, with a song…
“Go on, pay the money and duck, whoot, whoot, whoo.”
Hmm.. nope. That doesn’t work… anyway…
Stack Sats, GSD, and Pip’s mental prediction today – You’re gonna see a duck.
Either a rubber one, or a real one. Heck, one of you might butcher a duck, today.
The world is full of options.
(leans back in office chair, and whispers)
“I’m in your head, huh” (looks around and shouts) ‘ECHOOOO00000oooooooo……..’
Sorry, had to be done….. carry on with the day and do something.
