Rain, Repairs, Random Sports, and a Garden at the Camper: Episode 834

Coffee of the Day: Brian’s Blend by Food Forest Farms

Welcome back to another edition of The LOTS Project Morning Show blog! Today’s episode was packed with muddy adventures, mechanical dilemmas, some surprisingly entertaining sports, and the first steps toward growing our own food—right from the camper. If you’re looking for a behind-the-scenes peek at RV life, land management, and finding joy in unexpected places, Episode 834 delivers.

Let’s dig in.

Mother Nature’s been busy lately—and not in a gentle way. We’ve had a string of massive rain events out here, and I finally had a chance to take a proper walk around the property to see what held up… and what didn’t.

Delinquents Gully is one of those properties that teaches you a little more every time it rains. Some of the erosion control held, other parts? Not so much. It’s a humbling reminder that the land always has the final say, and any attempts to “manage” it are more like suggestions than commands.

During the walk, I noticed areas that used to be solid are now deeply rutted. A few of my temporary solutions, like the cabin water catchment in the creek or tree cuttings down in the food forest, clearly need upgrading. But I also saw some encouraging signs—places where runoff naturally channeled the way I had hoped. It’s progress… with a little chaos sprinkled in.

If you’re living off-grid or managing any kind of rural land, moments like this are golden opportunities to reassess your systems. Water will always take the path of least resistance—it’s our job to understand that path, not fight it.

Truck Troubles: When Intermittent Becomes Unavoidable

Anyone who’s ever owned an aging truck knows the drill: a little hiccup here, a weird noise there… and then BAM—it’s no longer a “sometimes” problem.

That’s exactly where I found myself this week. My truck, which had been showing intermittent signs of trouble, decided it was time to go full-time with its issues. Let’s just say the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, and reliability officially left the chat.

So now, I’m staring down a decision I was hoping to delay: Fix it, replace it, or get creative.

The reality of RV living is that your vehicle isn’t just transportation—it’s part of your survival system. It hauls gear, handles terrain, and if you break down in the middle of nowhere, that can quickly become a serious situation. Making a call on repairs versus upgrades isn’t just about dollars; it’s about priorities, safety, and long-term plans.

Right now, I’m leaning toward a patch job to buy some time while I shop around and weigh options. But I’ll be honest—it’s never fun to be pushed into a corner by a machine you depend on.

Dodgeball, Pickleball & Ultimate Frisbee: A New Relaxation Ritual?

I never thought I’d say this, but dodgeball might be one of my favorite things to watch right now. Right alongside pickleball and ultimate frisbee.

No, seriously.

In the past, I’d chill out with the usual lineup of shows or podcasts, but lately I’ve stumbled into this quirky little niche of competitive alternative sports. Something about the energy, the ridiculous intensity, and the “wait, is this real life?” vibe just hits different.

Dodgeball games are full of pure chaos. Pickleball has become a kind of chess match with paddles. And ultimate frisbee? It’s like football and soccer had a baby… with better hair and way more yelling.

What started as a background distraction has become my go-to wind-down ritual. I encourage anyone feeling stressed or overwhelmed to check out one of these—you might just find a new guilty pleasure.

Growing Again: Our Tiny Camper Garden

One of the most exciting parts of this week was watching Kori get her hands in the dirt again. Even in the limited space of RV life, we managed to carve out a little garden in pots right next to the camper.

It’s modest—some herbs, greens, a few peppers—but it’s deeply meaningful.

After years of growing on a larger scale, starting small again feels grounding. There’s something about planting food you intend to eat that reconnects you with your own sovereignty. It’s not about saving money or prepping for disaster (though those are valid perks). It’s about the daily practice of food security, one pot at a time.

If you’ve been putting off starting a garden because of space, time, or mobility—let this be your sign. You can start small. Start now. Even one plant matters.
