Cabin Build Update: Four Days of Real Progress
What we accomplished:
- 52 joists hung (2×12s): 26 per side off the center beam
- Blocking installed between joists (thanks to a loaned DeWalt framing nailer)
- Hardware: All Simpson Strong-Tie brackets and spec’d structural screws (staying consistent across the build)
- Subfloor staged (¾” T&G) and ready to set
- Full perimeter house wrap installed (~120 ft), plus peak coverage next—think “circus tent” access flap to keep the interior dry until siding goes on
Why the house wrap now?
We’re using a standard ¾” T&G subfloor from the shed-fab supplier. It’s solid, but we don’t want standing water hitting bare floor and framing before metal siding, windows, and doors go on. The wrap gives us a stopgap weather barrier so we can keep momentum without soaking framing lumber.
Logistics & Next Steps:
- Windows/doors: Comparison shopping and ordering this week (lead times TBD)
- Metal siding: Order after framing layout confirms openings
- Timeline: Weekday solo sessions + weekend pushes; target livable by Jan 1 (not finished, but functional)
Personal note:
Standing on the deck height (~4 ft up) and looking across a fully wrapped perimeter was the first “this is a house” moment. After months of ground-level work, it’s a huge psychological win.
