Welcome to Episode 872 of The LOTS Project Morning Show.
This episode is a classic LOTS-style mix of real-world cabin progress, everyday friction with modern systems, observations from daily routines, and a few reminders about how dependent we’ve all become on things we rarely think about—until they stop working.
Cabin Update: Doors, Cold Weather, and Reality Checks
Cabin progress continues—just not always on the timeline you imagine.
This past week’s main win was getting one of the doors installed. It sounds simple, but as anyone who’s installed doors knows, they can quickly turn into one of the more frustrating parts of a build. The wall layering left things about half an inch short, which meant fabricating custom spacers.
With no table saw on hand, borrowing one from a neighbor down the road ended up being the right move. Milling spacers out of a 2×4 turned out clean, straight, and exactly what was needed. Once those were in place, the door finally sat correctly, opened smoothly, and looked right.
The deadbolt still needs a little extra chiseling on the strike plate, but overall the install was a success.
Weather, however, is becoming the next big factor. With a serious cold snap and snow in the forecast, cabin work may slow down again—not from lack of motivation, but from practicality. Tennessee doesn’t have the snow infrastructure to deal with even moderate accumulation, and once ice sets in, it’s often smarter to stay put.
Sometimes progress looks like swinging a hammer. Other times it looks like preparing firewood, filling water jugs, and planning not to leave.

Sponsor Highlight: Planting Comfrey Before Summer Hits
If you’re in the southern states, right now is one of the best windows to plant comfrey.
Getting roots in the ground early gives them time to establish before the brutal heat and dry conditions of summer. If you wait too long, young plants struggle. If they’re established before summer hits, they’re far more resilient.
That’s why now is the sweet spot.
You can find Bocking #4 comfrey roots at ComfreyRoots.com, including the popular 5-pack that’s been moving quickly. Once comfrey survives its first summer, it becomes tough, productive, and incredibly useful—for soil building, compost, animal systems, and more.
The Banking “Nightmare” That Wasn’t—But Still Matters
Friday night dinner turned into one of those moments that instantly drops your stomach.
A debit card declined at a restaurant. Then again at a gas station. No fraud alerts. No obvious explanation. Plenty of funds in the account.
That’s when the mind starts racing.
Anyone who’s dealt with card fraud knows what comes next: frozen accounts, replacement cards, waiting days (or longer) for access to money you technically own but can’t use.
The culprit turned out to be painfully simple—an expired card that somehow stayed in the wallet long after a replacement was issued.
Relief, sure. But the moment still highlighted something important.
You don’t realize how dependent you are on a system until it hiccups. Even briefly. Even when it’s your own fault.
That’s where redundancy matters—having backup cards, alternate accounts, and options that don’t rely on a single point of failure.
Walking the Dogs Along the County Road
Daily dog walks along the county road have become one of the most consistent observation points of day-to-day life.
Most drivers are courteous. Some slow down. Some move over. A few never look up from their phones at all.
Beyond the traffic, though, the wildlife activity has been ramping up.
Deer—mostly does—are showing up daily, often standing just off the road watching quietly before disappearing back into the woods. Squirrels are back in what can only be described as “suicide mode,” sprinting across the road without warning and keeping everyone on edge.
Owls have started making appearances again, floating silently between trees during walks.
It’s not a scenic trail or a nature preserve—it’s just a county road. But when you slow down and pay attention, there’s a lot happening around you that most people never notice.

Propane Regulator Fix: More Complicated Than It Should’ve Been
The propane regulator situation is finally resolved.
What should have been a simple replacement turned into multiple trips to the hardware store thanks to a mismatched outlet size. A single overlooked letter in a part number was enough to complicate the entire job.
Once the correct fitting was sourced, everything came together cleanly—and the generator actually seems to start easier now, even if that might just be perception.
Running generators on propane continues to make sense here. No gas storage. No carb issues. No ethanol problems. Slightly lower output, sure—but oversized generators make that a non-issue.
Sometimes the lesson isn’t about tools or parts. It’s about slowing down and double-checking before clicking “buy.”
Follow-Up: The Gas Station Robbery Attempt
The attempted gas station break-in turned out to be stranger than expected.
The suspects weren’t adults—they were minors. Thirteen to fifteen years old. Armed not with a real rifle, but a pellet gun dressed up to look like one.
They didn’t even target the plate glass door. Instead, they tried breaking through a small window pane, which made no practical sense at all.
They were caught quickly. Names weren’t released due to their age.
It’s one of those stories that leaves more questions than answers—but also reinforces why situational awareness matters, even in small towns.
Bitcoin, Silver, and Market Watching
The weekly Bitcoin guessing game continues, with Bitcoin sitting around $93,051 at the time of the show.
Silver also made a notable move recently, hovering just under $94. While good news for holders, rising precious metals often signal broader instability rather than prosperity.
Markets were closed for the holiday, but physical metals don’t stop trading—and divergences between paper and physical markets are becoming harder to ignore.
Hardware Wallets and Reducing Trust
One of the simplest ways to reduce reliance on fragile systems is self-custody.
The Blockstream Jade and JadePlus hardware wallets continue to be recommended for exactly that reason. Easy enough for beginners, secure enough for long-term holders, and now paired with an updated app that allows balance viewing without the device—while still requiring the hardware wallet to actually send funds.
That balance between usability and security matters.
Final Thoughts
This episode wasn’t about big announcements or major breakthroughs.
It was about reality:
- Building takes time
- Systems fail—or appear to
- Small mistakes can feel massive in the moment
- Paying attention changes how you experience everyday life
Sometimes progress is installing a door.
Sometimes it’s realizing you pulled the wrong card out of your wallet.
Sometimes it’s just noticing an owl on a quiet road.
