DIY Solar Power: Learn It, Design It, Build It

Brian at the future solar array site after clearing trees and brush

DIY solar power doesn’t need to be mysterious—or reduced to somebody else’s shopping list. This hub follows the complete process of understanding, designing, testing and building practical solar systems using real equipment, real limitations and real-world results.

Start with the fundamentals below, then follow the projects as I turn a pile of used panels into working systems for the property.

Learn Solar: Start Here

New to solar? Follow these lessons in order. Each one builds on the concepts explained in the previous lesson.

Solar basics: volts, amps, watts and watt-hours explained

1. Solar Electrical Basics

Understand volts, amps, watts, watt-hours and amp-hours before trying to design a system.

How to read a solar panel label and understand Pmax, Vmp, Imp, Voc and Isc

2. Reading a Solar Panel Label

Learn what Pmax, Vmp, Imp, Voc and Isc tell you about a solar panel.

Solar panels wired in series versus parallel explained

3. Series vs. Parallel

See how different wiring configurations change array voltage and current.

Solar Projects & System Builds

Follow complete solar projects from the first design limitations through installation, testing and real-world use.

The Main Property Solar System

Follow the primary off-grid system from clearing the array site and testing used panels through mounting, wiring, batteries, inverter setup and real-world performance.

Project in progress—new installments will be added here.

The Shed Utility Solar System

A smaller secondary system built with spare panels to charge cordless-tool batteries and power an RV water pump for an outdoor sink supplied by the shed’s rainwater catchment.

Project planning underway.

Tools, Reviews & Field Notes

Solar doesn’t end when the system is installed. These sections will grow with the equipment I test, the problems I encounter and the products I actually use.

Tools & Equipment

Meters, solar-panel testers, MC4 tools, wiring equipment and the other gear used to build and troubleshoot real solar systems.

Solar Product Reviews

Hands-on reviews of batteries, panels, inverters, charge controllers and related equipment—with the good, the bad and the limitations clearly explained.

Field Notes & Troubleshooting

Real measurements, unexpected problems, repairs, system changes and performance updates from equipment operating in the field.

Solar Gear & Suppliers

These are suppliers and products I use, test or reference while building solar systems. Not every product is right for every project, so always compare the equipment specifications against your actual system requirements.

A Note About Solar Safety

Solar panels, batteries and related equipment can produce dangerous voltage, current and fault energy. The information on this site documents my projects and is provided for educational purposes—not as a substitute for the equipment manufacturer’s instructions, applicable electrical codes or qualified professional advice. Always confirm component ratings, disconnect power before working and use appropriate protective equipment.
